Humans are social creatures; we gossip and gab, argue and brag, blow hot air and let cats out of bags. As such, human conversations in fiction—just like in life—are essential. Dialogue often forms the backbone of a scene. It reveals character, creates conflict, and moves a story forward. For many writers, however, crafting effective dialogue can prove challenging. How does one, for instance, write an exchange that is realistic and compelling? This class is dedicated to addressing such questions. In addition to reading sample dialogue from accomplished authors, we will tackle a series of exercises designed to hone your dialogue skills and elevate your fiction.
