Listener-sponsored, non-commercial, Houston based public radio station KPFT, 90.1FM is part of the Pacifica network. Pacifica was founded in Berkeley, California in 1948. Their radio station, KPFA, was the first of this kind. Today, KPFT has about 8,000 members. Members can get involved in many ways. This class will tell you how. Come with your questions, enthusiasm and desire to help make a difference. Learn about the bylaws which were significantly amended in 2003 as a result of a lawsuit that was filed by members from New York, Washington, D.C., Berkeley, Los Angeles and Houston, and, as a result, provide you with the opportunity to run (in 2012) and serve on both the Local Station Board (LSB) and the Pacifica National Board. On one end of the radio spectrum there is Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. On the other, there is Pacifica. Compare the two and discuss how the different perspectives affect not only your thinking but the political climate in America and the world today. While some of this class may be dry, we promise it won't be boring. There will be plenty of time for discussion. Come to listen but also come to be heard. Jessica Apolinar is the co-host of Sweet Nightmares, a show that airs on KPFT Thursday/Friday from 11pm-2am. She was elected to the Pacifica National Board in 2011. She is on the Local Station Board. Colleen O'Brien (BA, History, SUNY-Albany) studied journalism for four years at Syracuse U. She was a member of the KPFT Program Council for two years. Her news reports, features and PSAs have been heard on KPFT for the past three years.
