Join Bayou Bend in January and February 2012, as the historic house museum offers an interactive, taste-bud-friendly look at the history of several popular American beverages. Over four weeks, participants will learn the history of coffee, tea, distilled spirits and hot chocolate in American foodways, as well as taking part in tastings. These four beverages have reflected fashion and taste, but have also affected economics, politics, and of course the objects that Americans made and used. Guest speakers include Nick Castelberg, Chef and Head of Foodways at the George Ranch in Sugarland, as well as Lee Garcia, Editor-in-Chief of Tea in Texas Magazine. During the fourth week, a special tour of the Bayou Bend collection which focuses on objects relating to drinking and beverages will be a part of the itinerary. This series was inspired by the fall Bayou Bend-Rienzi History Book Group selection A History of the World in Six Glasses by Tom Standage, which can be enjoyed at the Kitty King Powell library.
